On June 16, 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning regarding the risk of losing the sense of smell after using some Zicam brands of nasal spray cold remedies. Zicam gels, sprays, and swabs containing zinc have been linked to at least 130 reports of the loss of the sense of smell (anosmia) since Zicam was approved in 1999.
The loss of the sense of smell, either permanently or temporarily, can have severe and devastating effects on a person's quality of life. The loss of the sense of smell can result in depression, and decreased enjoyment in eating food or engaging in outdoor recreational pursuits.
